{The Oldest}

If you read the post underneath this one in it’s entirety, then you know that I had to send Junior in for a checkup after he quit on the job.  I was really worried that he wasn’t going to be back in time for my October 3rd wedding, so I’d reserved a camera from a rental company just in case.  I wasn’t expecting to have him back safe and sound until the end of next week at the earliest, but Canon completely surprised me by delivering him to me TODAY.  That’s 2 days after I authorized his repair.  Way to go, Canon!  I’m extremely impressed with the quick turnaround.

Anyway, I needed to make sure he’s in tip-top working condition, so I asked The Oldest if he would model for me real quick.  I’d also ordered a battery pack for my flash (finally), and I wanted to try that out with some OCF, so I asked The Youngest if he wanted to make some money as my assistant.  He named his price ($3) and we were in business.

The Oldest found this hat when we were school shopping.  I happen to have a hat fettish myself, so I had to get it for him.  If this isn’t the coolest hat in the history of cool hats, I don’t know what is.

The light isn’t exactly in the right place for this shot, but The Youngest didn’t do to bad for his first time as a voice activated light stand.

{Head Shots, Lisa Walsh Style}

When Ryan asked me if I’d be willing to do some head shots for him, I didn’t hesitate to say yes, but I made sure he knew I’d never done them before.  Somehow I knew that wouldn’t be an issue with him, though, because he is the epitome of the perfect client…easy going, carefree, always happy, super flexible and is down for anything.  His fiance, Renae, is much the same, which is why I’m SO looking forward to their wedding on 10/10.

I was meeting Ryan and Renae to go over last minute wedding details anyway, so we decided we’d knock out the head shots after that.  That is, until Junior decided to Just. Stop. Working.  Absolutely nothing happened when I pressed the shutter release, for what seemed like forever.  No problem, I don’t crack under pressure.  While Ryan and Renae were concerned about me, I was apologizing profusely while running to get Big Daddy, aka, my backup camera.  I got situated, turned it on, took a few shots to get my exposure right and It. Quit. Working.  The battery died.  Feeling a little sheepish while they waited patiently for me to get my act together, I inserted the spare battery and took a few more test shots only to have it quit.  Again.  Another dead battery.  (Mind you, they’re fully charged before every wedding in case I ever need to use it.  Apparently they’re not holding their charge very well these days.)

So, after 1 dead camera and 2 dead batteries, I’d exhausted all of my options and was completely embarrassed.  The wonderful client’s they are, they were more worried about my situation then the fact that they were inconvenienced.  Luckily we were able to reschedule for the next morning, provided I could get my act together, lol.

Sunday morning we headed over to the local soccer field, because Ryan is a huge soccer fan.  He even owns a semi-pro team.  I really wanted the head shots to represent him.

Whenever I’m shooting, I prefer to start out in a way that puts the subject most at ease.  For Weddings that’s usually when they’re getting ready at the salon, and for Engagement Sessions I tend to start out shooting from a distance so I’m not up in their face.  For this…what better way than to kick the ball around for a bit?

Then we moved on to some casual head shots in the t-shirt.  This is one of my favorite ones from the session, because it’s just Ryan.  A few times I’d asked him not to smile, and when going through the images I tossed almost all of them.  He’s always smiling, so it’s just not natural to see pictures of him with a serious face.

There are 2 different versions of this shot.  Focus on the ball:

And focus on him.  This is another one of my favorites.

I got so wrapped up in shooting and getting finished in time that I almost forgot to take some of him in his nice shirt!

Ryan, thanks for being so patient and understanding, and thanks for the opportunity.  I’ll see you in a few weeks!

P.S.  For my Photographer friends and client’s with weddings coming up, I want to let you know that Junior has been sent to the Canon repair center for a checkup.  I think his shutter may be going, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

{It’s *Not* Swine Flu}

Just a quick post to let you know that I’ve been under the weather this week, thus my absense from the blog. It seems either allergies or a virus has greatly aggravated my asthma, and My breathing has been progressively getting worse for the last week or so, to the point that I can’t get a good night’s sleep or sit on the couch without my albuterol nearby.

The Dr. prescribed some meds yesterday that haven’t helped yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they do soon!

All DVD’s for August’s & September’s weddings will be shipped out by Monday, and emails and phone calls will be returned as soon as I start to feel better.

Thank you for your patience & understanding!

{Mary & Sean; A Cazenovia Wedding}

Mary & Sean tied the knot at St. James Church in Cazenovia, NY.  This was my first Cazenovia wedding, and I was really excited because we’d scoped out some beautiful locations for pictures ahead of time, not to mention the timing of the ceremony meant that pictures were going to be during that perfect light just before sunset.  Yay for couple’s who plan pictures at the best possible times!

Mary got ready at the Brewster Inn.

I just love bagpipers at weddings.

After the ceremony we drove over to Lakeland Park for some pictures.  I can’t decide which of these two is my favorite.  See what I mean about the light?  I love the look of back lighting…especially when the light is as gold and yummy as it is here.

Mary & Sean had their reception at Traditions at the Links.  It was my first time shooting there as well, and I can’t wait to have the opportunity again.  What I saw of the course is beautful, the ballroom is gorgeous, and the food was incredible! I highly recommend them.

I wanted to try something different (for me) at this reception, so I dug my PocketWizards out of my camera bag and used some off camera flash.  I wanted to replicate the back lit look I had in the images above.

Sometimes I can’t decide if I prefer the color or the black & white version.  Which do you prefer?

Mary’s Mom & Dad recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, and Mary & Sean surprised them with a cake and a dance of their own.

Mary made a point of keeping things simple on their wedding day, and I kept that in mind for their ring shot.

I’ll leave you with a few dancing shots.

Mary & Sean, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your wedding day!  I wish you many years of love and happiness.
