{gold}

The Oldest is in track this year, and last night was his 2nd meet.  (His first meet was last Saturday, and I couldn’t attend since I was 2nd shooting for Genevieve.)  I didn’t miss much that time as he was just doing the high jump and according to him it didn’t go very well.  He’s been having some problems with his ankles, and he just couldn’t make the jumps.  He was supposed to jump last night as well, but asked his coach if he could drop out since his ankles weren’t doing any better.  That left him with the 100 and the 4×100 relay.

It was a week ago that we took him up to Fleet Feet to get fitted for some special track shoes.  (Spikes?)  I was very impressed with the friendly, knowledgeable staff, who helped him find just the right shoe for his events.  Most of us pick shoes based on their appearance first, which was what he tried to do, but based on his events and shoe size they only had 2 for him to choose from…a pair of black and green shoes and a pair of bright gold and blue ones.  Since his favorite color is green I thought for sure he’d pick the black and green pair, but he surprised me and went with the gold pair because they were more comfortable.  I have to be honest….they’re kind of hideous, lol.  We picked on him during the drive home and told him he’d better do well if he was going to run in gold shoes.

Well, last night he came in 1st place in his very first race of the season, so he’s earned the right to wear those gold shoes, after all!  I’m one proud mom, and I was so glad I got to be there to witness his moment!  Below are a few shots from his race.  I can’t get on the track for a better angle, so these will have to do.

Here he is practicing for the relay.  You can get a better view of the shoes here.

He was the first leg of the relay.  Again, I didn’t have a better place to shoot from.:(

What better way to celebrate than with some new Under Armour and some gold balloons to go with your shoes?

{Head Shots, Lisa Walsh Style}

When Ryan asked me if I’d be willing to do some head shots for him, I didn’t hesitate to say yes, but I made sure he knew I’d never done them before.  Somehow I knew that wouldn’t be an issue with him, though, because he is the epitome of the perfect client…easy going, carefree, always happy, super flexible and is down for anything.  His fiance, Renae, is much the same, which is why I’m SO looking forward to their wedding on 10/10.

I was meeting Ryan and Renae to go over last minute wedding details anyway, so we decided we’d knock out the head shots after that.  That is, until Junior decided to Just. Stop. Working.  Absolutely nothing happened when I pressed the shutter release, for what seemed like forever.  No problem, I don’t crack under pressure.  While Ryan and Renae were concerned about me, I was apologizing profusely while running to get Big Daddy, aka, my backup camera.  I got situated, turned it on, took a few shots to get my exposure right and It. Quit. Working.  The battery died.  Feeling a little sheepish while they waited patiently for me to get my act together, I inserted the spare battery and took a few more test shots only to have it quit.  Again.  Another dead battery.  (Mind you, they’re fully charged before every wedding in case I ever need to use it.  Apparently they’re not holding their charge very well these days.)

So, after 1 dead camera and 2 dead batteries, I’d exhausted all of my options and was completely embarrassed.  The wonderful client’s they are, they were more worried about my situation then the fact that they were inconvenienced.  Luckily we were able to reschedule for the next morning, provided I could get my act together, lol.

Sunday morning we headed over to the local soccer field, because Ryan is a huge soccer fan.  He even owns a semi-pro team.  I really wanted the head shots to represent him.

Whenever I’m shooting, I prefer to start out in a way that puts the subject most at ease.  For Weddings that’s usually when they’re getting ready at the salon, and for Engagement Sessions I tend to start out shooting from a distance so I’m not up in their face.  For this…what better way than to kick the ball around for a bit?

Then we moved on to some casual head shots in the t-shirt.  This is one of my favorite ones from the session, because it’s just Ryan.  A few times I’d asked him not to smile, and when going through the images I tossed almost all of them.  He’s always smiling, so it’s just not natural to see pictures of him with a serious face.

There are 2 different versions of this shot.  Focus on the ball:

And focus on him.  This is another one of my favorites.

I got so wrapped up in shooting and getting finished in time that I almost forgot to take some of him in his nice shirt!

Ryan, thanks for being so patient and understanding, and thanks for the opportunity.  I’ll see you in a few weeks!

P.S.  For my Photographer friends and client’s with weddings coming up, I want to let you know that Junior has been sent to the Canon repair center for a checkup.  I think his shutter may be going, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

{Training Camp}

As some of you may know, the NY Jets arrived in our tiny city for training camp last week.  Hot Husband has been a life-long Jets fan and used to attend training camp with his father when he was a kid, so he is excited to have the chance to share the experience with the boys. I know he’s dying to see these, so I’m bumping this post ahead of the cake photos from this past weekend.

Although I don’t have the lenses required to get close up shots, I couldn’t leave Junior at home.  It’s not every day an NFL football team is in your backyard!  Here are a handful from Sunday’s rainy practice:

That’s Nick Mangold holding the ball.  You’ll notice I composed it with the Dunkin’ Donuts sign in the background, ha ha.

*Total* lens envy.  Also?  I can’t remember this guy’s name because he’s not on Twitter.  Or if he is, Hot Husband doesn’t follow him.  I can only remember the player’s he follows, lol.

Jay Feely.  He’s on Twitter.

It had been sprinkling all morning, but then the heavens opened up.

Which, in my opinion, makes for more interesting sports images.  Especially if you have a lens like that guy up above and can get close-ups of rain dripping from the players.  I can’t.

The guy in the middle is Chansi Stuckey.  He’s also on Twitter.  See how Twitter has improved my memory?  And people think it’s a waste of time…

Sports Saturday

Saturday Hot Husband had a rugby game in Syracuse.  We didn’t get to stay for the whole game because The Youngest had his first Baseball game that day, too.  So there’s not too many rugby pictures because we weren’t there for the whole game, and there’s only 2 baseball pictures because by the time the game started I was badly sunburned and trying to stay in the shade.  I was not at all prepared for 90 degree weather in April.  In New York of all places.

And now for some baseball.  This one is probably going to be my all-time favorite.  This pretty much sums up The Youngest playing sports, lol.

Here’s his first hit!  I have to say, despite the picture above, we’re starting to think that baseball might be his “thing.”
