The other day I got some new photography toys tools, and I couldn’t wait for a victim subject to try them out on. I haven’t spent much on glass since I started my business…mostly because I bought the best lenses available from the beginning, and also because I didn’t have any money left after buying the best lenses from the beginning, lol. I did pick up my 100mm macro lens last year and that quickly became my favorite lens. It’s super sharp and allows me to get amazing detail shots, and I started thinking about switching to all prime lenses so I could always have that nice, crisp look. I’ve also been longing for a lens wider than the 24-70mm I had in my bag.
I can honestly say this was a tough decision for me because I had a lot of options available. I was worried that a super-wide angle lens wouldn’t work very well for wedding portraits, but I knew I would use it for shots at the back during the ceremony, and definitely for my landscape work. I also knew if I went super-wide that I’d have to pick up another in-between focal length for large bridal parties. It took me 24 hours, but I finally decided on a 14mm for really wide shots and a 24mm for wide-but-not-too-wide shots of groups. Tonight was the first chance I had to play around.
I was a little nervous that 14mm was going to be “too” wide, but it’s not at all. I’m loving it.

This shot is on my website with my 24-70, but I wanted to do it again with the 14mm.

I’ll admit I was dying to see if I could use it on people, so The Youngest happily begrudgingly let me try it out on him. I rudely interrupted him chasing squirrels to get this shot.

Last one. As long as I don’t get too close to the subject I think it will work for group shots. I’m going to have so much fun with this one at weddings!

I despise winter. I really do. I feel so uncreative this time of year. At the same time it’s when my need to photograph something kicks in, I guess because I don’t have weddings to photograph so my itch isn’t being scratched. At all.
I try so hard to find photography projects to keep me busy…preferably indoor ones, lol. Last year a bunch of fellow Photographer’s and I did the “letter-a-day” challenge. That was a lot of fun, and I need to come up with something along those lines to do again this year.
Last week we had something of an ice storm, so I decided to go out and find some inspiration. My dislike of the frigid temperatures kicked in, though, and I wasn’t quite dressed properly to traipse through 2 or 3 feet of snow, so in the end I ended up walking a short (and I mean short!) distance in snow that wasn’t too deep to get these images. As much as I love a scenic landscape, I’m hard pressed to find any real beauty in bare trees with no snow on them. I decided taking close-ups would be best. I only took about 30 pictures because I wasn’t wearing any gloves. These are my two favorites.
